The Choptank River Heritage Center sponsors and participates in maritime archeology activities to discover, document, and exhibit underwater historical resources of the Choptank and Tuckahoe Rivers.

Activities have included:

• Shoreline survey, July 1994
   
• Underwater Archeology - Live Dive, April 1995
   
• Maryland Archeology Week lectures and exhibits

Archeology sites and resources of significance in the Choptank and its tributaries include:

• The Vesper, an 1870s steamer that sank near Denton in 1930.
   
• 1840s pungy sailboat excavated from Watts Creek, in Martinak State Park
   
• Barge-style ferry similar in design to cable-drawn ferries once common on the Choptank and Tuckahoe
   
• Scow barge probably used to transport goods from Hillsboro to Wayman Wharf on the Tuckahoe River
