Sojourn Route

Start on Day 1 -- Friday -- Sailwinds Park, Cambridge, Maryland, to the historic steamboat and cannery town of Choptank in rural Caroline County.

Day 2 -- Saturday -- The Sojourn continues from the town of Choptank to the colonial tobacco port of Kingston Landing.

Day 3 -- Sunday -- The final leg of the Sojourn runs from Kingston Landing to Joppa Steamboat Wharf at Old Harford Town Maritime Center in West Denton.

Participants can sign up for the entire 3-day Sojourn, or for any of the daily segments.  Sunday night camping can be reserved at Martinak State Park by arrangement with the Sojourn Staff.

Outfitting

Canoe and Kayak Rentals can be obtained from Harris Creek Kayak, Sherwood, MD (410-886-2083), and Choptank River Outfitters, West Denton, MD (410-479-4950).

A pickup boat will be available for paddlers who prefer a leisurely pace and a late afternoon ride to the evening destination. All paddlers wll be transported from the takeout point to camping at Martinak Park each day.

  • Bag lunch provided for Day 1 and Day 3 segments of the Sojourn.  Lunch will be catered at lunch stop on Day 2.
  • Catered dinner will be provided each night at the camping location, Martinak State Park.
  • Catered breakfast will be provided at Martinak Park on the morning of the Day 2 and Day 3 segments.
  • Paddlers can indicate on the registration form their preference for vegetarian meals.

    Choptank River History

    The Choptank River Sojourn is a unique opportunity to experience the history and culture of the middle and upper Choptank River.  For three centures, from colonial times to the steamboat era, the Choptank was the region’s only transporation link to cities of the Chesapeake and the world. Choptank Sojourn paddlers will receive a free Choptank & Tuckahoe RiverGuide CD with interactive maps, sites histories, and the new Choptank and Tuckahoe River Aerial Photo Guide with over 400 aerial photos of the river.

    Cost of the Choptank River Sojourn is $50 per daily segment, $150 for the entire Sojourn.  Paddlers can sign up for any one or two days, or the entire trip. The fee for single-day paddlers will include lunch meal, baggage transportation, and optional pickup boat.
