Travel Safely on the Choptank River Water Trails

Remember these Safety Tips while exploring the Choptank and Tuckahoe Rivers by small craft:

  • Keep weight centered and low at all times, especially when entering and exiting the boat.

  • Keep ropes coiled when not in use. Never tie a rope to yourself or a nother person, especially achild.

  • Do not exceed the weight capacity of your boat.  Use the following formula to determine the maximum number of persons you can safely carry in calm water:

       People = (length of boat x width) / 15

  • Boating safety increases with numbers; boat with others.

  • In canoes, kneel down during windy and choppy conditions.

  • If your boat flips over, remain calm.  Hold onto your paddles and the boat. Roll the boat upright. Climb aboard near the bow or stern, or with another boater balancing the other side.  Bail out enough water to lighten the boat and paddle to shore.

  • Be prepared for inclement weather. Carry the clothing and gear you need.  Windy and rainy weather, even in summer, can lead to hypothermia if improperly dressed.

  • Cold water is dangerous and can kill unprepared boaters.  Always wear your life jacket, especially when the water is cool. Sudden immersion in cold water causes a large number of boating deaths each year.

  • In hot weather, wear light clothing, sunglasses, and hat. Use sun block and drink lots of fluids.

  • Be aware of other boaters, especially powered craft. Think ahead to avoid collisions.

  • Wear protective foot gear when wading or walking along the shore.
