Choptank River Trip - Joppa Overnight Run

A View of the Choptank From the Steamboat Deck

A traveler aboard Joppa in 1888 described the trip on the Choptank River, as recorded in the Easton Gazette:

“The banks of the stream are never monotonous in outline. They are full of surprises and ever varying shape. One's eye is met, from time to time, with some new peninsula jutting out from the mainland, while the river itself so turns and twists within the limits of its green banks that, sometimes it becomes lost to view entirely, only to appear again in full beauty upon a nearer approach.

“The banks at the water's edge present that rich and velvety variety of shades in green found in marsh grass, and with the frequently occurring background of trees and bushes which exhibit a similar distinction in shades, constitute aharmony profound.  Here we pass a luxuriant cornfield, there a mammoth peach orchard, stretching out its rich promises for August along the shore; now and then a farmhouse, with its white walls, peeping out from the foliage surrounding it, as if half in fear that the approach of the steamer will disturb its tranquility; while far in the distance, the horizon is shut out, and the beauty of the Choptank landscape enclosed by a seemingly continuous line of woodland.”
