When and Where is the Sojourn? |
Saturday July 24 and Sunday July 25, 2004 Day 1 -- Put in 9:00 a.m. at Greensboro, Maryland. Paddle 8.5 miles downriver to Martinak State Park on Watts Creek. Stop along the way for exhibits and refreshments at CHRC's Joppa Wharf Museum in West Denton (mile 6.5). Vigorous paddlers can do a side trip up Watts Creek near the park, or Chapel Creek above Denton. Camp at the park or arrange nearby accommodations. Day 2 -- Start 9:00 a.m. at Martinak Park, near Denton. Paddle 7 miles to the public boat ramp at Ganeys Wharf, near the mouth of the Tuckahoe River. Vigorous paddlers can do a side trip up Tuckahoe River or nearby Fowling Creek. At the start location, participants will fill out an ACA waiver form and pay the $5 ACA fee. |

What Will We See Along the Route? |
Explore route details, historic sites, photos, and maps between Greensboro and Ganeys Wharf at our online Choptank and Tuckahoe RiverGuide here. Paddlers who want to thoroughly scout the route can check out aerial photos here. (The large map files at this link will download slowly over low-speed Internet connections. This is an online Sampler of the Aerial Photos CD you can order from CRHC. We will have CDs available for sale at the Sojourn camp site.) |

What About Transportation? |
We're keeping it simple: After you arrive at Martinak Park at the end of Day 1, we will drive you back to Greensboro to fetch your car. At the Ganeys Wharf destination on Day 2, we will watch your boat and drive you back to fetch your car at Martinak Park. Pick up your boat and drive home from Ganeys Wharf. We will provide printed maps at the start of Day 1 that show take-out points and, we hope, comfort stations along the route. We will provide a cellphone number that Sojourners can call for emergency pickup at take-out points along the route. |
What About Food? |
We're keeping that simple, too: Bring your own lunch. Bring or buy your own breakfast and dinner. We will provide maps to nearby grocers and fast food in a follow-up letter to registered Sojourners. We will provide firewood for campers who want to rough it. |
What About Camping or Overnight Accomodations? |
We offer free camping at Martinak Park to the first 30 registered Sojourners! We have reserved 6 campsites (average 2 tents per site, 2 paddlers per tent) and 2 cabins. The sites will be paid for by our generous Sojourn sponsors. We will provide contact info and maps to B&Bs and the new motel in Denton in a following newsletter to registered Sojourners. |
Got Music? |
You bet! Free live music at the campground on Saturday night by the Oil City Ramblers. We will also have laptop computers set up at the campsite, so you can connect to the online “RiverGuide” to learn more about the Choptank and Tuckahoe Rivers, their history, and the communities and culture they sustain. |
What Could Be Better! How Do I Register? |
Simple: Email organizers Mike Barry (mbarry1157@hotmail.com) and Don Barker (MarylandGIS@yahoo.com) and tell us you want to Sojourn with us. We will put you on the list for camping, or send you info about accomodatioins, and send follow-up newsletters to registered Sojourners. |
